Charities have come under scrutiny for breaking Kansaslaw by organizing charity poker events. 　　Noteveryone in Kansas is happy that the law prohibits charities from raisingvaluable money for their cause. Among those that are not pleased is FinneyCounty prosecutor John Wheeler, who is responsible for prosecuting these crimeswhen assigned. 　　”We have agroup or organization that sponsors something that’s fun for a lot of peopleand raises money for a charity, and we call it a crime,” said Wheeler, to theGarden City Telegram. “And it just seems to me to be contradictory, contrary,and I wish the Legislature would take a look at it after all these years.” 　　Wheeler’sapproach towards gambling is similar to the one taken in many states thesedays. Casinos have become a popular avenue to pursue for state legislature’sthat are facing budget shortcomings. Kansas was one of those states severalyears ago, becoming one of the first in the current group of states that areregulating casinos. 　　Thecharities have largely been the groups affected negatively by the creation ofregulated casinos. Lawmakers and gaming officials have wanted all gaming moneyto go through the casinos, and many states have started to crack down onillegal charity poker games. 　　It has noteven been traditional poker events that have suffered. In Kansas, and aroundthe US, poker runs have become popular for raising money. Motorcycle ridersgain sponsors, and then set out on a scavenger hunt of sorts, picking up cardsat various locations in the event area. At the end of the run, the bikers meetin one centralized location, and the player with the best poker hand from thecards they collected, is the winner. 　　This eventis illegal in Kansas and several other states where charity gambling isconsidered against the law. Wheeler has plenty of support in Kansas to have thecurrent laws changed, and lawmakers have stated that they may soon look intothe issue.
